We have 16 more females to give birth in the next week or two, so watch this space for more pics and video. Also, our goat Patsy P. Oat gave birth a couple of days ago to a super cute little girl, named Sweet Pea. She is small but healthy and has a interesting frosted coloration. Clementine (our other goat) in due in 3 weeks.

The lamb was born out in the snow but the mother had done a great job drying and cleaning him up and by the time we found him he was dry and walking and fed. We moved mum and lamb to a small inclosure (called a jug) with a heat lamp for the next couple of days, before they rejoin the rest of the flock. We are expecting many more lambs this spring, some at the Elm Street location, and many more at the Smith Neck location. Watch this space for more pictures and videos!

Hope you all had a good winter and survived the storms and snow! The farm was lucky and we have had no major damage (fingers crossed for no future bad weather)! Our goats are starting to show the first signs of pregnancy, and we are looking forward to seeing our first goat kids jumping around and getting into trouble. Our sheep are due to lamb in around 8 weeks time and we are hoping for 30+ lambs this year.

We have started a number of crops in the greenhouse, including onions, leeks, spinach, beets and lettuce. Today we have been pruning approximately 30 Asian pear trees we are caring for this year. We have three different varieties, each with a different texture/flavor and time to full ripeness, so expect to see pears in your CSA share. We will also have blackberries included in the CSA share.

If you have already signed up for our 2013 CSA we thank you, and we are excited for our second year. If you are planning on joining we do have our early bird discount until March 15th (pay in full and receive one week for free). If you are planning on joining but would like to pay closer to the first distribution or to pay in installments throughout the CSA season, please consider reserving your place with a $100 deposit by March 15th. We rely on this early investment from our members, and it enables us to purchase the many items we need at the beginning of the season, and to fix all the equipment that has been sitting in the barn all winter.

We look forward to seeing you all at the farm this season.

The CSA is to be bigger and better this season, with an added 4 weeks (bringing it to 24 weeks total), two pick-ups each week (either Tuesday or Sunday), and many new crops including sweet potatoes and okra!
A CSA is a partnership between the farm and its customers. If you choose to join, you will receive a share of the harvest, consisting of 24 weeks of fresh vegetables grown at the farm without chemicals. By becoming a member you will gain an intimate connection to the land, knowing where your food comes from and exactly how it is grown. The farmers benefit by having income at the beginning of the season, when most of the farm costs occur. Also, by having CSA members join early, the farmers can focus on growing delicious vegetables. CSA members share the bounty and risks associated with farming while supporting a farm dedicated to providing high quality produce for its members.

How does it work?

Distribution follows a market-style format, allowing you to choose the items you want and leave the items you don't want. Each week you will choose from a selection of the freshest, in-season vegetables, greens, and fruits (see availability chart for what you can expect). There are two basket sizes, corresponding to the large and regular share sizes. Most of the time your limit is dictated by the size of your basket. Once your basket is full with your favorite vegetables and greenery, that is your share for the week. Some bulky items will be "out of basket" meaning they don't need to fit in the basket (like watermelons and our large heads of lettuce). A few items will have a per share limit, for example the first tomatoes of the season will be limited so we can make sure that everyone gets a share of the harvest. As the season progresses, we will remove these limits.

As a CSA member, you also have access to our pick-your-own (PYO) garden, during distribution hours. Items from the PYO garden don't have to fit in your basket, but we ask that you only take what your family will use for the week. Some items may be limited at the beginning of the season. Growing in the PYO will be peas, beans, cherry tomatoes, a wide selection of herbs, and flowers. The PYO garden is a fun place to eat a cherry tomato still warm from the sun, teach your children where their food comes from, and chat with other CSA members. If you are unable to use the PYO, let us know and we will accommodate you.

Do I need to contribute work as part of my share?

No. We do not require a work commitment from our members. If you would like to help with a harvest or other farm activities we would be happy to get your help.

Do you have a work share option?

Yes! This year we will be accepting 3 work-share members. In exchange for 5 hours of work on the farm per week, you will receive a large share. Work will mainly be harvesting, transplanting, seeding and weeding, but can include other farm jobs such as animal chores (e.g., feeding/watering chickens, collecting eggs, and helping move sheep). Work share members need to be able to commit to the full CSA season. Contact us for more information.

How does it work and what is offered?

Most of the growing for a winter CSA occurs in the summer for storage items (e.g. potatoes and winter squash) and early in the fall for greens (shortening day length and cool temperatures really slows growth in plants). Most of what we offer is grown outdoors in the fields, but when the heavy frosts become more regular, we start harvesting from our unheated hoophouse. In an effort to give members choice of what is in their share while balancing the limitations of cold weather growing, we are following a "mix and match" style of distribution. For any given week we will offer a selection of the following: salad greens (lettuce, mizuna, claytonia, tatsoi, spinach, and mustard), cooking greens (kale, pac choy, swiss chard, broccoli raab, chinese cabbage, and spinach), roots (carrots, turnips, radishes, and beets), winter squash, potatoes, and other items such as broccoli, brussel sprouts, onions, leeks, cauliflower, and kohlrabi. You will be given a weight limit for each item (e.g. 1/2 pound of salad greens, 1 pound of cooking greens, and so on), but you will be given some variety within each type to choose from (e.g. 3 or 4 different types of salad greens, 3 or 4 types of cooking greens, etc.). Our goal is to offer enough variety that you will have a good selection of items you like, knowing that everyone's tastes are different.

As part of your share, you will also get 1/2 a dozen eggs from our chickens that run around on grass eating bugs and greenery. We will also have a couple of fun bonus items.

Do I need to contribute work as part of my share?

What is the cost?

We have one share size in the winter, and it costs $300 for 10 weekly distributions of veggies and greens grown at our farm without chemicals. We require a $100 deposit to reserve a spot in the winter CSA. The remaining $200 is due by the first pick-up (Oct. 23). If you would rather a payment plan, please contact us.

When and where is it?
